Classic Papers Revisited

چکیده
The minimum alveolar concentration of anesthetic (MAC) necessary to prevent movement in response to a painful stimulus was relatively constant in dogs anesthetized with halothane. MAC varied over a two-fold range with the intensity of the stimulus, but appeared to reach an upper limit beyond which a further increase in intensity did not increase MAC. For the same stimulus MAC was constant from dog to dog. MAC was unaffected by duration of anesthesia, unaltered by hypocarbia or hypercarbia, by phenylephrine-induced hypertension or by mild hypoxia (PaO2 30 to 60 mm. of mercury). Hemorrhagic hypotension or marked acute metabolic acidosis reduced MAC by 10 to 20 per cent. Severe hypoxia (PaO2 less than 30 mm. of mercury) reduced MAC by 25 to 50 per cent. MAC appears to be a useful standard by which all inhalation anesthetics may be compared.

Lawrence and Kuypers (1968a, b) revisited: copies of the original filmed material from their classic papers in Brain.
This article aims to reintroduce two classic papers on motor control published in Brain in 1968, in which Lawrence and Kuypers reported their systematic studies of the effects of lesions to the corticospinal system (Lawrence and Kuypers, 1968a), and subsequently to the descending brainstem pathways (Lawrence and Kuypers, 1968b) in the Old World macaque monkey. They showed that the capacity for ...
متن کاملBertrand’s Paradox Revisited: More Lessons about that Ambiguous Word, Random
The Bertrand paradox question is: “Consider a unit-radius circle for which the length of a side of an inscribed equilateral triangle equals 3 . Determine the probability that the length of a ‘random’ chord of a unit-radius circle has length greater than 3 .” Bertrand derived three different ‘correct’ answers, the correctness depending on interpretation of the word, random. Here we employ geomet...
متن کاملKellerer’s theorem revisited
Kellerer’s theorem asserts the existence of a Markovian martingale with given marginals, assumed to increase in the convex order. It is revisited here, in the light of previous papers by Hirsch-Roynette and by G.Lowther.

متن کاملClassical Mechanics Revisited
Two linear algebra based strategies are presented to deal with general classical mechanics problems with constraints. Classical concepts such as holonomic and nonholonomic constraints, virtual displacements, principle of virtual work, Hamilton’s principle and method of Lagrange multipliers are critiqued.
